We were told by employers, government, and private institutions, that we were nonessential, that “we can do it without you”.
It means that if you are not too big to fail, you will be allowed to fail. Perhaps for a second, we believed it.
But when we left the white walls bare, concert halls empty, there was still music, there was still art, there was still humanity because our humanity is essential to the fabric of society, and the spirit of the economy.
So we are marking this moment of honesty, when we all had to start looking at how we spend our time. When we took a second to ask ourselves if this is the only way things could be. When we came together, to decide for ourselves what was truly nonessential.
This is the moment when we realize that it is not the institutions, buildings, and venues that are essential but the people whose work, patronage, and engagement keep them alive that are.
NONESSENTIAL T-shirt is available now in unisex sizes S-2XL.
Profits are split minimum 50/50 between participating artists and a local relief campaign of their choice.
